Support for proposed Brampton cricket stadium only 31 per cent: poll of city residents

Almost 70 per cent of Brampton, Ont. residents are against the idea of building a new city stadium to be used primarily for cricket.
According to a recent poll – conducted by Insauga – only 31 per cent of more than 600 people polled said they favoured a new stadium.
Mayor Patrick Brown has been a vocal proponent of a facility that can accommodate cricket at the highest level. He said the city has historically underfunded cricket, but some of the largest international cricket tournaments have been played in Brampton without a venue to support large numbers of spectators.
The city figures the cost of a 5,000-seat stadium to be about $35 million. Brown says the city has budgeted $264 million over the next few years for recreational infrastructure, suggesting some of that can be earmarked for cricket. Such a stadium would also be used for soccer and field hockey.
